Rwanda’s U18 national team head coach Moise Mutokambali, has set his eyes on the semi-finals of the upcoming 2016 FIBA Africa U18 Championship that will be held at Amahoro Indoor Stadium from August 25th to 4th September.
Six years ago, Rwanda hosted the tourney and finished in sixth position. However, this time the Junior Hoops coach Mutokambali is targeting to finish in the top four.
‘’Our objective is to reach at least the semi-finals of this tournament. After that anything is possible. To host the tournament is a very good initiative as it will definitely increase basketball’s popularity in the country,” he said on Sunday before travelling to USA ahead of the two weeks training camp.
The 35-year-old tactician insists that hosting the competition should spur the growth of the sport not only in Rwanda but also in the region.
The 12-team tournament will serve as a qualifier for the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship that will take place in the Egyptian capital city of Cairo.
"This is the very first time that this world youth tournament will take place on our continent so we want to be among the competitors,” he added
Junior Hoops will play friendly games against Cameroon and Mali, and the Colleges of Arizona, Phoenix and Tucson in the theme called "U18 World Basketball Classic”.
