Rwanda national cycling team rider Patrick Byukusenge has been ruled out of danger after sustaining a shoulder injury on Saturday afternoon in Kivuruga, Musanze District while returning to Africa Rising Cycling Centre.

His teammate Jean Claude Uwizeye was also involved in the accident, but he did not sustain any injuries.

"He is having surgery today (yesterday).  When you pin and plate a collarbone break, the recovery time is very quick.  Provided everything goes well, he should be back on his bike (on a trainer) by the weekend,” the Director of Marketing/Logistics for Team Rwanda Cycling Kimberly Coats told Times Sports via email.

Coats added that a quick recovery will ensure that Byukusenge gets enough time to prepare for the Tour of Colombia. 

"Byukusenge has a positive attitude, and is committed to getting back on the bike as soon as possible.  We are very proud of how he is handling this situation, a minor setback,” she added.

The 23-year-old was expected to undergo surgery at King Faisal Hospital, Kigali, yesterday.

Byukusenge is expected to take part in the Tour of Colombia (Vuelta a Colombia) slated for June 13-26 across the South American cycling nation.

The Benediction rider clocked 3h 16’ 50’’ to emerge winner of the second day of Rwanda Cycling Cup ‘Race to Remember’ on Saturday from Nemba border post in Bugesera to Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali, a total of 125.3km.

Amis Sportif of Rwamagana rider Jean Claude Uwizerye came in second place in 3h 16’50’’.
