Benediction rider Patrick Byukusenge clocked 3h 16’ 50’’ to emerge winner of the ‘Race to Remember’, yesterday, from Nemba border post in Bugesera to Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali, a total of 125,3km, on the second day of the Rwanda Cycling Cup.

The riders made six laps (Kimironko, Nyarutarama, Kibagabaga and Amahoro Stadium), with Byukusenge emerging victorious and bagging Rfw100,000.

Amis Sportif of Rwamagana rider Jean Claude Uwizerye came in second place in 3h 16’50’’, while Samuel Mugisha and Hategaka Gasore came in third and fourth positions, respectively, clocking 3h 22’56’’.

"I am very happy that I won yesterday’s race. I knew that I would win the race because sprinting is my strength and I always use it to my advantage,” said Byukusenge.

In the women’s category, Les Amis Sportif riders Clementine Niyonsaba won the stage and got Rfw50, 000, followed by teammates Beatha Ingabire and Xaverine Nirere.

Benediction Club young rider Eric Manisabayo won the race in the junior category and received Rfw50.000.

The winner of the ‘Farmers Race’, from Kigali to Nyagatare, the previous week, Joseph Areruya did not perform well in yesterday’s race after his bicycle punctured two times at Kibagabaga with four laps to go. He finished in eighth position in 3h 28 minutes and 15 seconds.

Benediction Club finished the race in the first place followed by Les Amis Sportif.

The Rwanda Cycling Cup will continue on Saturday with the riders racing from Ngororero to Rubavu.

‘The Race to Remember’ aimed to honour sportsmen and women who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
