Brief background of ICT in the UR

The University of Rwanda was established September 2013, by Rwanda Law. It was created by merging seven (7) Public Higher Learning Institutions. Its student enrolment has increased from 28800 students in 2013/14, to 31760 in 2015/16. About 5% of the students are enrolled in postgraduate programmes.

The University was established with the mandate to become a research led institution, offering quality and innovative programmes as well as engaging in relevant and impactful research, that will contribute to the social economic transformation of the country and the region.

Worldwide research has shown that ICT can lead to improved student learning and better teaching methods.

A report made by the National Institute of Multimedia Education in Japan, proved that an increase in student exposure to educational ICT through curriculum integration has a significant and positive impact on student achievement, especially in terms of Knowledge, Comprehension, Practical and Presentation skills.

At UR, ICT has been incorporated in multiple activities and systems in the University, forming the backbone of many academic practices and services provided by the University today. A diverse set of technological tools and resources are used to communicate, create, disseminate, store, and manage information. These technologies include computers, the

Internet, software and many other devices and systems, including the Moodle learning platform. ICT is used in research for data acquisition and manipulation as well as a research management tool for monitoring and evaluation.
