Ugandan striker Davis Kasirye scored a hat trick as Rayon Sports ran riot against leaders and defending champions APR FC, putting four past their archrivals, at a fully packed Amahoro National Stadium in Remera, Kigali, yesterday.

Malian striker Ismaila Diarra scored the other goal for the blues, who have now cut APR’s lead at the top of the table to just one point, with the former having played a game less.

It was Kasirye who opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a header from a well taken free-kick by Burundian Pierrot Kwizera.

In the 32nd minute, he added another with an excellent finish after good passing of the ball with Kwizera and Diarra that APR defenders Abdoul Rwatubyaye, Emery Bayisenge and goalie Jean Claude Ndoli failed to read.

APR tried to get back into the game but Rayon Sports goalkeeper Eric Ndayishimiye made sure that the first half ended 2-0 in his side’s favour, with a string of fine saves including from a Jean Claude Iranzi free-kick.

In the second half, the blues picked up from where they had left off, Diarra scoring just one minute after recess. He scored from a Dominique Savio Nshuti assist.

APR’s Tunisian tactician Nizar Khanfir brought on Tumaine Ntamuhanga for Patrick Sibomana at the start of second half. Later, he brought off Issa Bigirimana and introduced Bievenue Mugenzi but his tactics didn’t bear fruit.

Instead, in the 88th minute, Davis Kasirye completed his hat trick after playmaker Savio Nshuti beat two APR defenders before extending an excellent pass to the Ugandan striker to make it 4-0.

By now the stadium had erupted into wild jubilations by Rayon fans, who were delighted to see their team wallop their greatest rivals.

Rayon Sports coach Djuma Masudi, who lifted the 2004 league as a player with Rayon Sports, is seeking to write history by claiming this year’s league title as a coach – having only assumed the hot seat in acting capacity in March.

He’s yet to lose a game.

Last season, Rayon Sports lost both of its fixtures against APR; 0-1 in the first leg and a 4-0 humiliation in the second leg.

Elsewhere, Rodriguez Murengezi scored the only goal in the 20th minute as AS Kigali beat SC Kiyovu.

In Muhanga, former Amavubi striker Bokota Kamana scored twice as AS Muhanga defeated Etincelles 3-1.
