Rwandans in Botswana gathered at the University of Botswana in the capital Gaborone, on Saturday, for the 22nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

During the ceremony, Rwandans were joined by different officials from the diplomatic corps accredited to Botswana from different African countries and the European Union.

Dr Dinokopila Bonolo, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Botswana, condemned the denial and trivialising of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, saying such acts have dire consequences.

The ceremony included the lighting the candles, a minute of silence to remember Genocide victims and screening of a documentary film showing how the Genocide was prepared, as well as the current achievements in country 22 years later.

Wilfred M. Musau, the chargé d’affaires at the Kenyan High Commission in Gaborone, said East African countries, and the entire world, should and must draw lessons from what happened in Rwanda to avoid falling into the trap of a genocide again.
