Reigning champions APR FC improved their chances of retaining the national football league title as they edged rivals Police FC 2-1 on Sunday at Kigali Regional Stadium.

Young striker Issa Bigirimana put the military side in the lead in the 7th minute but Police FC skipper, Innocent Habyarimana netted the equaliser in the 34th before APR assistant captain, Iranzi Jean Claude sealed the win for his team two minutes to full time.

The win maintained APR’s place at the top of the league table with 40 points as it eyes to win title for a record-extending 16th time in 22 years.

Rayon Sports remain in second place with 36 points despite not playing this weekend after their match against Etincelles FC was postponed to a yet to be confirmed date.

"This is the result we wanted. I am happy with the boys, but we have to stay focused for the next fixtures because we still have a long way to go. Our aim is to win the title,” said APR’s Tunisian coach, Nazir Khanfir.

The loss saw Police FC drop from fourth to sixth spot with 31 points, same as AS Kigali, who were held to a goalless draw away to Sunrise FC in Rwamagana.

Head coach Andre Casa Mbungo said, "It is of course a disappointing result because we wanted to win and stay in the title race. We will continue to work hard and try to finish high. We tried to win the game but APR looked better in the final minutes and scored the second goal.”

Mukura Victory Sports earned maximum points after a slim 1-0 win over Rwamagana City to stay in third position with 35 points.

Resurgent SC Kiyovu jumped to the fourth place with 32 points after beating Amagaju FC 2-0 in Nyamagabe. Martin Twizeyimana and Cedric Nkubwimana scored for Yves Rwasamanzi’s team.

AS Muhanga registered their second win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Musanze FC in Nyakinama to jump to 15th place with 11 points and in the process relegated Rwamagana City to bottom place with 10 points after 18 rounds of matches.
