Uganda’s U20 team reached the next round of the 2017 CAF U20 qualifiers after beating Rwanda U20 2-1 in the return leg on Saturday afternoon at Mandela National stadium at Namboole in Kampala.
Uganda qualified on a 3-2 goal aggregate to set up a game against Egypt in the next stage. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw in Kigali three weeks ago.
Bugesera FC striker Abeddy Biramahire gave Jean Baptiste Kayiranga’s team the lead in the 17th minute with a great header off AS Muhanga right-back Ange Mutsinzi’s curling delivery from the right.
However, the hosts equalized three minutes after the half time break through Zake Luboyera’s first time attempt that gave Rwanda’s goalkeeper Jimmy Nzeyurwanda no chance and the striker (Luboyera) netted the winner for Uganda.
The Ugandan side will face Egypt at the next stage of the qualifiers for a slot at the CAF U-20 championships that will be hosted by Zambia in 2017.
Last year, Uganda U-23 beat Rwanda twice during the second round of Olympic Qualifiers 2-1 in Kigali and 2-0 in Kampala, and a year before, Uganda U17 team, led by Farouk Miya and eliminated Rwanda in the qualifiers for the continental youth championship.
