Rwandans and friends of Rwanda living in South Africa on Thursday met at the Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg to mark the 22nd commemoration for the Genocide against the Tutsi.

The event which was co-organised with the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre, was besides Rwandans, attended by survivors of the Jewish Holocaust and South African dignitaries, according to a statement.

The statement from the Rwandan High Commission in South Africa indicates that among the dignitaries present included a South African Member of Parliament, Bantou Holomisa.

During the event, the Rwandan High Commissioner to South Africa, Vincent Karega, called upon Rwandans and Africans in general to stand united for the common good to ensure what happened in Rwanda 22 years ago, does not happen elsewhere.

"He requested Rwandans to fight genocide denial and channel their energy into constructive actions to build a better country,a proud legacy to future generations," reads part of the statement.

Commemoration activities started both in Rwanda and different countries on April 7 in honour of the over a million Rwandans killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
