Once you see them, you’ll understand why they are called cigarette pants; they are skinny, fitting pants that do not go below the ankles.

They go with just about everything and if paired well, can make a fashion statement. You can wear them to work, on a night out, a casual event and even over the weekend.

"Cigarette pants are the easiest things to pull off, if one knows how to go about it. Paired well and not too ‘out there’, the pants are a hit,” says Vanessa Mukashema, a local designer at Gikondo Market.

Mukashema, who owns a boutique at the same market by the name African Designs, outlines a few steps on how to wear the cigarette pants.

When choosing them, one should opt for the ones that are neither too tight nor too big; with the right option, they are able to flatter one’s figure.

Always go for those ones that have fewer patterns, so that you can be able to accessorize them with other accessories without looking like you are overdressed.

Go for the right shoes, for instance; if in flats, opt for the pants that are a bit longer. Again, for the heels, look for the ones that are light and easier to lift to avoid being uncomfortable.

Cigarette pants always look good with a well buttoned up top or shirt, so opting for one, to complete your look.

Belting up your pant will not only bring a sophisticated look, but also help in highlighting ones waist, thus giving you an illusion of a thin waist.

When choosing accessories, go for the simple ones to maintain the attention over the pants. Also, one can finish up the look by accessorizing the outfit with a purse, handbag or a clutch depending on the occasion at hand.
