Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) was last night feted at the Global Water Summit for a fast turnaround in financial management and utility operations in 2015.
The utility company won in the category of Water Leaders’ Award is in recognition of efforts that have seen revenues of the firm double while billing efficiency reached 100 per cent.
The global water summit was held in Adu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
WASAC beat 3 other utility companies from Indonesia, South Africa and Grenada to scoop the top prize.
In a series of tweets, the utility’s CEO, James Sano said that award was dedicated to President Paul Kagame for his leadership and governance.
Sano added that they were well aware of the work ahead as well as expectations from citizens.
According to organisers of the awards, WASAC’s nomination for the award was informed by the Utility’s cash operating margin improvement by about 174 per cent from a deficit of Rwf 136m to a surplus of Rwf 374m.
The judges recognised the roles of; the firm’s CEO, the Ministry of Infrastructure and a consulting firm contracted to facilitate the transformation.
The award comes days after the utility firm officially inaugurated Nzove 2 Water treatment plant, pumping an additional 25,000 m3 per day into Kigali City water network, which already pumped 65,000 m3 per day.
