It was a phenomenal finish Sunday evening as Eagles Chess Club (ECC) was finally crowned 2015 the National Chess League winners.

At the end, the only club fielding two teams in the inter-club ties of the national league championship that begun last September also had its players lead in individual medal awards.

The two ECC sides – Eagles B and Eagles A – emerged first and second, respectively.

The club’s four players; Eugene Mugema Kagabo, CM Godfrey Kabera, CM Alexis Ruzigura and Fidele Mutabazi were awarded medals for being best players on boards one, two, three and four medal winners, respectively.

Marie Faustine Shimwa of Knight Chess Club (KCC) was the only outside player to grab a medal for her domination of board five but even then, ECC youngster, Joselyne Uwase, 13, run away with the medal of youngest best player of the tournament for her four wins in four games.

Uwase also shocked the chess fraternity when, despite playing black, she trounced Shimwa – the reigning 2015 female national chess champion – in their round 10 encounter.
