The secret life of .... Collin Sekajuga

After travelling to more than 15 countries on the African continent as Rwanda’s representative for artistic study tours, exhibitions, and international workshops, Collin Sekajugo, felt the need to turn his skills, and inspiration towards a more extensive project: one that would nurture the talent of Rwanda’s young artists, and launch Rwandan contemporary art to global heights. He formed the Ivuka Arts in Kigali where both young and old artists have found a home to display and exploit their talents.

The first thing you do in the morning

When I wake up I either say a little prayer or practice some kind of self awareness.

What makes your day?

One single accomplishment

Your favourite meal…

Chicken Tika Masala accompanied with Greek salad, Sombe and Pilau.

Your style icon?

Craig Native in Johannesburg

Where did you grow up?

Masaka, Uganda and Nairobi, Kanya

Your dream city….

I dreamed of Cape Town, then I lived there but in my dreams now I see Dakar.

Your greatest fear

To be a looser in life.

All your money goes on what?

On adventures of the world and investing in society.

You’re no good at…

At hiding feelings or attitudes or emotions

What keeps you awake at night?

Visualisation

What does love mean to you?

Giving and taking genuinely and truthfully.

What is your favorite word?

Smart.

The most unappealing habit

Being straight forward in my statements.

Your bar in Kigali…

Torero Cafe is my place. There is an artist culture, and I am delighted whenever I’m there.

What is the closest you have come to death?

During my high school days in Nairobi’s South B, a cop ran after me (I didn’t know why), and I collapsed into a drainage pit. Thank God, I survived!

What do you intend to be in ten year’s time?

A successful entrepreneur.

How do you relax?

I go for a steam bath, or escape from my routine studio work.

When did you last cry, and why?

Last year, when my closest friend Jean Claude Sekijege died.

Your favourite item of clothing…

I’m not so trendy, am just free-styled. But a Craig Native or Jean Paul Gaultier would do for me.

What was your favourite game in your childhood?

It was soccer before I fell and twisted my arm, then quit it.

To whom would you most wish to say sorry, and why?

I don’t owe that to any other person but the Malawian woman, whose baby I failed to save though I did my best to.

Tell us a secret?

I refer you to a book called ‘The Secret’. Read it.
