Makeup; it not only enhances ones look, but with it, women can feel as confident as they want. While some prefer to go natural, many women will agree that makeup was made for a reason, and that if applied well, it can completely transform one’s look.

Whereas it is makeup in general, women need to understand that there’s a certain look for every occasion. For example, the makeup you’d wear on your wedding day isn’t exactly fit for the office. The makeup on a night out might not be appropriate for a job interview.

Milly Umuhoza, a makeup artist and a visual painter, says it’s always good to consider the skin type and tone before applying makeup.

"With the right colour of foundation, one is able to come out more beautiful than before. Some colours help in choosing the right foundation that matches ones skin tone,” says Umuhoza.

Foundation, also referred to as cover up or concealer, is a skin-coloured makeup that is applied to the face to help cover up minor blemishes, create a uniform complexion and, sometimes, to slightly alter the shade of the skin.

She adds that gel or mask works well for all skin types, especially those with oily skin. When the wrong makeup is applied to oily skin, after one or two hours, the face will start ‘shinning’ again.

Umuhoza outlines a few steps to follow when applying makeup.

"Before one decides to wear makeup, it’s good to wash your face first with primer before applying makeup, this helps to prolong the wear of the makeup as it allows a smoother application,” she says.

After washing, apply eye shadow, she says, which should come first to prevent any drift down to the cheekbones.

Liner or mascara; they increase the volume of eye lashes, making one’s eyes look beautiful. Add eyebrow pencil or gel, one should test the shade on their chin first. Then apply foundation, she adds.

"Concealer helps in covering any imperfections of the skin such as blemishes and dark circles. Thereafter, one can apply powder or contour powder, which sets the foundation and prevents skin from getting too oily or shiny,” she says.

Apply powder blush only to the apple of the check, then lip or lip liner, and again, one should go for the colour they like.

The last step is setting spray on the face. This helps keep the makeup applied stay longer.
