The minister of sports and culture, Julienne Uwacu, has called upon Rwandans to actively participate in the forthcoming genocide commemoration activities, especially by attending vigils in their respective communities.

Uwacu made the call on Wednesday during a news conference organised to update Rwandans on the preparations of the 22nd commemoration for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

This year’s commemoration will be held under the theme; "Kwibuka22: Fighting Genocide Ideology.”

"No form of entertainment will be accepted during the commemoration week (April 7th-13th) that begins the 22nd commemoration of the Genocide against Tutsi," said the minister in the news conference held at Amahoro National Stadium, where the ministry is based.

Uwacu was flanked by Dr Jean Damscene Bizimana, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG).

"Entertainment places, radio and television stations will only play songs that help Rwandans to remember those who perished during the Genocide. No entertainment activities should be staged during the mourning week,” said Uwacu

Uwacu also said that commemoration will start with the lighting of the "flame of remembrance" at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi and other memorial sites across the country on 7th April.

She also urged Rwandans living abroad to participate in commemoration activities that have been organized by the countries diplomatic missions across the globe.
