Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC) is planning to organise several rally events to attract young upcoming drivers in the sport and to entertain rally fans this year.

The RAC General Assembly held last week, agreed to organise more events this year.

Part of the events on this year’s calendar is the "National Slalom” a new event which was organised last Sunday at Amahoro stadium by Huye Motorsport club. The event attracted over 30 crews.

"The essence of events like Slalom is to attract and promote sports in the country. Over 40 had registered for the event but because some of them lacked the required documents, we reduced the number to 30 drivers,” said Fabrice Nyiridandi, a RAC official.

Ten youngsters aged between 18-20 years with different personal cars took part in short closed event, and Nshimiyimana Dadi was crowned the youngest driver.

The other events to be organized this year include:  The Eastern province sprint scheduled for April 30th, the Liberation Rally at the beginning of July, Mountain Gorilla in August, the Huye Gakwaya Memorial Race in October and the Christophe Duquesne Memorial Rally in December.

0n the continental level, Ivorian driver Gary Chaynes leads the African Rally Rankings with 25 points, Don Smith from Kenya is second with 18, following the first event- Bandama Rally De Cote D’ Ivoire held in Febuary. The second continental rally event will be Sasol Rally in South African.
