Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) has been shortlisted for an international award by the Global Water Intelligence for a fast turnaround in financial management and utility operations in 2015.

The nomination under the category of Water Leaders Award is in recognition of efforts that have seen revenue of the firm double while billing efficiency reached 100 per cent.

Global Water Intelligence is an international recognized UK-based publication that discusses emerging trends in the water industry to inform the formulation of strategies.

According to organisers of the awards, the Utility’s cash operating margin improved  by about 174 per cent  from a deficit of Rwf136m  to a surplus of Rwf 374m.

The judges recognised the roles of; the firm’s Chief Executive Officer, James Sano, the ministry of infrastructure and a consulting firm contracted to facilitate the transformation.

WASAC was created in 2014, out of the split-up of the national utility agency; the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA), following the government decision to separate water and energy operations.

"Under the leadership of CEO James Sano, in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and 2ML Consulting, the utility completed a performance transformation with flying colours and in record time. The programme targeted reforms in leadership, management, customer service, energy usage, and non-revenue water. Now WASAC is considered the benchmark for water performance in sub-Saharan Africa,” the judges noted.

The award short listing comes as the utility firm is today inaugurating Nzove 2 the awaited Water treatment Plant which will see an additional 25,000 m3 per day into Kigali City water network adding to the existing  65,000 m3 per day.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for the 19th of April in Adu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The general public can vote for WASAC through the platform  http://www.globalwaterawards.com/2016-shortlist#WaterLeadersAward.

Established in 2006 by Global Water Intelligence, the Global Water Awards recognize and reward those initiatives in the water, wastewater and desalination sectors that are moving the industry forward through improved operating performance, innovative technology adoption and sustainable financial models.
