Muvunyi strikes double gold in IPC Grand Prix de Tunis

Hermas Muvunyi and Jean Claude Ndayisenga won three medals, including one gold and two bronze at the 10th IPC Grand Prix de Tunis in Tunisia.

The former world champion in Men’s 800m- T46 category, did not disappoint on Saturday, as he clocked 52:61 to retain his gold medal in the Men’s 400m- T46 category, winning it for the third time in four years, after 2012 debut and 2015.

The 28-year-old Paralympian Muvunyi overcame stiff challenge from Rabah Boussaid (54:71), who took silver and Yilmaz Bayrim of Turkey settled for bronze in 55:84.

In the Men’s 400m- T47 category, Ndayisenga, who was making his second appearance at the meet, won bronze after using 54:08, a historic first podium finish on international scene since his breakthrough last year. Nigeria’s Saidi Adedeji won gold while the silver medal went to Ivorian Addoh Kimou.

On Friday, Muvunyi had also claimed bronze medal in Men’s 1500- T46 category after using 4 minutes, 7 seconds and 11 microseconds. Ethiopia’s Haile Hailu (4:03:80) won gold while Stanley Kipkoech of Kenya (4:04:52) finished second.

The two medals took Muvunyi’s tally to six in the IPC Grand Prix de Tunis, including five golds and one bronze.

The middle distance runner won two golds in 2012 and retained them in 2015, in Men’s T46- 400m and 800m categories.

The duo who are expected to arrive back in the country on Monday afternoon, were without their coach Eric Karasira, who lost his father on the day of departure, and had to pull out of the trip.
