After ousting Hamiss Gatete in quarter-finals, youngster Ernest Habiyambere takes on Uganda’s David Oringa in semi-finals of the inaugural Gasigwa memorial tennis tournament this afternoon at Cercle Sportif de Kigali courts.
Former Africa’s number three in U16 category, Habiyambere, who brushed aside compatriot Gatete in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, has a tough task to overcome Uganda’s number two who cruised past DR Congo’s Innocent Bandora 6-0, 6-1on Thursday to storm the semis. He reached the quarter-finals after defeating Rwandans Lookman Rwandekwe in the first round and Aimable Kwizera in the second round respectively.
"I’m playing Oringa for the first time, he is a very good and experienced player, it’s going to be a tough challenge for me, nonetheless, I feel in top form and confident I can beat him,” the 17-year-old Habiyambere told Saturday Sport.
Also in the round of four, is Rwanda’s number one Dieudonne Habiyambere, who faces local adversary Olivier Havugimana.
Havugimana saw off Matayo Uwizeyimana in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-finals while Habiyambere thrashed Melle Bizimana 6-0, 6-3.
The tournament has been organized by the local tennis federation in memory of former Rwanda number one Jean-Claude Gasigwa, who died on January 8, 2015 after collapsing during a morning training session at Cercle Sportif de Kigali.
