Former world champion in Men’s 800-T46 category Hermas Cliff Muvunyi kicks-off his quest for a gold medal at the 10th IPC Athletics Grand Prix de Tunis today.
The three-day continental meet runs from March 24 to 26 in Tunisian capital, Tunis. The 28-year-old middle distance runner Muvunyi and compatriot Jean Claude Ndayisenga (sprinter) left the country last Saturday.
Muvunyi, who is attached to APR athletics club, won two gold medals in 2012 and two at last year’s edition, in 400m and 800m- T46 category.
However, the 800m race category has since been removed from IPC competitions, including the Paralympic Games in Brazil. This year, Muvunyi will be out to defend the gold medal in 400m T46 category as well as try to win the 1500m T46 duel.
Muvunyi, who has a personal best of 49:16 in 400m, which he registered at the 11th All Africa Games in Congo-Brazzaville last year, will today compete in the 1500m T46 race.
On Saturday, Muvunyi and Ndayisenga will vie for medals in 400m contests, Muvunyi in T46 and Ndayisenga in T47. Paralympian Muvunyi has already qualified for this year’s Paralympic Games along with the national women’s sitting volleyball team.editorial@newtimes.co.rw
