Rwanda’s number one Dieudonne Habiyambere overcame compatriot Yannick Muvunyi in the second round to reach the quarter-finals of the inaugural Gasigwa Memorial tennis tournament on Thursday at Cercle Sportif de Kigali courts.
Habiyambere beat Muvunyi in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to set a semi-final meeting with another compatriot Melle Bizimana today.
The 31-year-old Habiyambere reached the second round after beating Robert Ndagijimana in the first round 6-0,6-3 while Bizimana defeated Fils Ntakirutimana 2-6, 6-1 and 7-5 in the first round before beating Damascene Munyaneza 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 yesterday.
Ugandan David Oringa thrashed Rwanda’s Aimable Kwizera 6-0, 6-0 in the second round to set up a quarter-final clash with Innocent Nzabadora of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In the first round, Oringa defeated another Rwandan, Lookman Rwandekwe 6-2, 6-2 whereas Nzabadora overcame John Oyeti 6-0, 7-5 before overwhelming Tanzania’s Abdalah Omar in the second round.
The men’s single’s professional category attracted a total of 32 players, with Habiyambere and Oringa seen as favourites to win the title after Uganda’s top seed Duncan Mugabe withdrew from the tournament at the last minute.
Meanwhile, the women’s category which has attracted 16 players starts today.
