Rwanda national taekwondo team left for Kenya by road last evening for this year’s Chairman’s Cup Taekwondo Championship set for March 26-27 in Mombasa.
The team that includes 12 players; eight men and four women, are under Coach Allan Irene Bagire and his assistant Boniface Mbonigaba. Rwanda Taekwondo Federation secretary general, Placide Bagabo, is leading the entire delegation.
"We have been training since January and we hope to return with medals because we are well prepared not forgetting we have been successful in the previous tournaments,” says assistant coach, Mbonigaba.
This will be the third time Rwanda is participating in the annual tournament after debuting in 2011 with three players when they won the taekwondo Spirit title before winning four gold medals and a silver in 2013. The team did not compete in 2014 while the 2015 edition did not take place.
The two-day tournament has attracted players from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and hosts Kenya.
