Rayon Sports beat Amagaju FC 2-0 in the rescheduled national football league match played on Friday at Nyagisenyi Stadium in Nyamagabe District to climb to the top of the table for the first time this season.
Burundian international Pierrot Kwizera and Ugandan striker Davis Kasirye scored the goals in the 74th and 85th minute, respectively, as interim coach Djuma Masudi recorded a second straight win, and remains unbeaten in three matches since taking over from Belgian Ivan Jacky Minnaert.
Rayon now have 32 points, same as Mukura Victory Sports but the 2013 league champions have scored seven more goals than Godfroid Okoko’s team, from 15 matches. Reigning champions APR FC are third with 30 points have still have two games in hand.
"We defended well throughout the match, which was the foundation for today’s win, it was a tough game but we’re happy to win and take top spot in the table standings,” Masudi said after the match.
Rayon Sports’ interim coach added: "Players showed good character and spirit especially in the second half. I want to keep that spirit in every match between now and end of season.”
His counterpart, Abdul ‘Becken’ Bizimana attributed his team loss to what he called ‘basic mistakes’, "We played well in first half but in second, we made twp basic mistakes and it killed us.”
"However, we have to look forward, reorganize and try win the next games,” explained the former Etincelles coach.
The league will continue on Sunday when Marines FC, who stunned title hopefuls Police FC 2-1 in their last outing on Tuesday, host Rwamagana City at Umuganda Stadium.
