The United States Rwandan Diaspora (USRD), in collaboration with the Embassy of Rwanda in Washington, DC, and the Rwandan International Network Association (RINA) will today convene the first US-Rwandan Women’s Convention.
The first such gathering of Rwanda Women Diaspora event was organised under the theme, "Empowering Rwandan Women in the Diaspora: Challenges and Opportunities.”
The convention will feature a series of discussions about the role of the different generations of women in shaping the future of Rwanda, according to the organisers.
"The event will feature a series of panels looking at the roles of the different generations of women in the shaping of our nation; and the experiences of those living abroad who continue to uphold Rwanda’s heritage despite the challenges of adapting to the western world,” reads a concept note.
The US Rwandan Diaspora Women’s Convention was conceptualised recognising that Rwandan women played a critical role in the country’s rebirth.
"Through their efforts, women ensured that the struggles for freedom, dignity, development, peace and self-determination also addressed their aspirations for women’s emancipation, gender equality and women’s empowerment,” the note adds.
The event is set to support the vision of a Rwanda that is integrated, prosperous, people-centred, at peace with itself, and asserting its place in the global community.
Recognising that neither peace nor prosperity will be fully realised without the participation of women, the convention will explore the value of investing in women, given the role they play in families, and communities, and how it translates directly into human and social development, organisers say.
First Lady to address convention
First Lady Jeannette Kagame is expected to address the expected 500 participants, coming mainly from the US and Rwanda, to attend the convention.
Various speakers during the event are expected to highlight the determination of Rwandan women in transforming the country and continent, and actively mobilise women for collective participation, and action to advance Rwanda’s agenda for sustained development and prosperity for all.
The meeting seeks to forge new friendship, assess challenges faced by Rwandan women living in the US and setting up specific and achievable initiatives to meet these challenges, plus bridging inter-generational barriers and creating mentorship programmes to empower young generations.
Other objectives of the convention include, branding the concept of Agaciro (dignity), identifying areas where women in the Diaspora can fill the gaps for a sustainable impact, and to enhance Rwanda’s image globally.
