More than 120 junior athletes between the ages of 12 and 15, alongside 30 coaches benefited from the just concluded Junior NBA camp in Rwanda.
Hosted in Rwamagana's Groupe Scolaire St Aloys, the Jr. NBA Camp kicked off on September 21 through 24 in a partnership between NBA Africa and Ferwaba.
"I'm working with NBA Africa, I'm really happy to be here in Rwanda. The main campaign of this camp is working with kids at the grassroots level, improving their fundamental skills at the same time working with coaches and equipping them with the tools to get back to the schools and teach the kids in a better way," said Joel Yoba, Basketball Development Camps Liaison at National Basketball Association (NBA).
Yoba also said that there was a plan to have more such-camps happening this year with.
"For the kids, I think this is a huge opportunity, they are coming from different places, we have 43 schools from around Rwanda coming together in Rwamagana and they learn fundamental skills, how to play basketball, how to pass, dribble and shoot and they also make new friends because there are some people they never met before. I think this is an opportunity for them, not only to grow as basketball players but as human beings."
"The follow-up is simple for the coaches, there's an assessment that needs to be made with the partnership with FERWABA we are working so hard to make sure that all the coaches have the tools that will help them do the job when they go back to the schools."
For Moise Mutokambali, Ferwaba technical director, "Before school starts, we organized a camp for children under 14 and 16 years old, who usually play in the Junior NBA league. In this camp, we took 30 coaches and 120 children to improve their knowledge in three days and help them start the competition. of the Junior NBA league year”.
15 year old Lucky Nziza, one of the children who participated in this camp reiterated that the camp benefits young folks in 'many things', especially discipline, and the fundamentals that make us better know the game of basketball and I want to become a great player.
