Police in Nyabihu District are holding a woman in connection with trafficking narcotic drugs into the country.
Gaudence Murekatete was taken into custody on Monday evening after police officers recovered about 10,000 pellets of cannabis concealed in a bunker in her house located in Nyirakigugu Cell in Jenda Sector.
Supt. Alex Fata, the District Police Commander of Nyabihu said they received information from the public of her illegal dealings, prompting officers to go to her house to conduct a search as part of the investigations.
"When officers arrived at her house at about 5pm, she denied her involvement in any illegal dealings when asked, but when the officers conducted a search in her house, they discovered a bunker in her bedroom and when they opened the bunker that was covered with wood and mat, they recovered two bags full of cannabis,” Supt. Fata said.
The suspect is currently detained at Mukamira Police station as investigations continue.
Her arrest comes few weeks after her release from prison, where she was held over the same offense of drug trafficking.
"Most drug dealers and even other suspected criminals are arrested based on credible information we get from the public. We urge people not to keep quiet on any illegal and criminal activities in their communities or where they pass, because through information sharing we will successfully close all gaps wrongdoers attempt to seize for their criminal activities,” Fata said.
"Although drug related crimes top the list of crimes in Nyabihu, and even in the entire region because of its geographic location, they have reduced tremendously because of the existing strong partnership with the people, continued awareness and police operations against drugs,” he said.
Reports indicate drug dealers in this region exploit porous borders to sneak drugs and smuggled goods into the country, but according to police strategies have been drawn to deal with the issue.
