MUHANGA — Two armed robbers in Nyamabuye sector shot dead a Local Defence Unit personnel (LDU) on Wednesday evening.

Alex Ndayisaba Vundamuka, was killed in Ruvumera village while on a night patrol with a Police officer identified as Gaston. The duo attempted to foil a planned robbery, but the thugs shot fast, sources said.

One of the suspected thugs,Jean Pierre Nizeyimana, was arrested and another one escaped on a motorbike with a gun, according to Police. About nine army officers were deployed to hunt down the one who escaped.

Meanwhile, a motorist identified as Evariste Musengamana alias Muhanga, also was gunned down in the chase for allegedly aiding the escape.

At the scene, the group of soldiers claimed that Musengamana refused to disclose information on the suspect yet is the one who had transported him. He said that he was innocent and pleaded for mercy.

"I don’t know anything about the said gun and the suspects…don’t kill me, am innocent,” he pleaded. A security official later rushed him to Kabgayi Hospital in critical condition.

Security officials have put in place stringent measures to curb down robbery in the area; but thugs are suspected to come from Ngororero district, Wawa Island, and the DR Congo.

Cases of attempted armed robbery in Nyamabuye sector have been rampant. Two armed robbers were recently shot dead by army officers on patrol.

Ruvumera is also known for a high number of crimes including prostitution.
