President Paul Kagame has been awarded The Grand Croix by the Guinea-Conakry Government, the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a person by the country.

This was during Kagame’s visit to the country, on Tuesday at the invitation of his counterpart, President Alpha Conde.

On Tuesday, a state banquette was held in President Kagame’s honour during which he was awarded The Grand Croix.

Previously the award was presented to the President Erdogan of Turkey.

On arrival in the West African nation for his two-day state visit, President Kagame was welcomed by members of the Guinean cabinet as well as the Diplomatic Corps residing in Guinea-Conakry.

Rwanda’s envoy to Guinea-Conakry Stanislas Kamanzi said the visit aimed at further strengthening the already existing cordial relations between the two countries, according to a statement from the President’s office.

"This state visit will serve as an important opportunity for our two countries in terms of defining lines of cooperation that would be profitable for our two countries,” Kamanzi said.

The leaders discussed how to fast track development, it added.

During the visit, Kagame was also expected to tour key projects in the Guinean capital.

The two countries were also expected to agree on a general cooperation framework, which will inform more specific cooperation agreements in the future.
