Green Hills Academy Primary pupils yesterday donated scholastic materialso worth Rwf 2 million to fellow pupils of Mbyo primary school in Nyamata, Mayange sector. The materials included bags, mathematical sets, pens and pencils, text books and exercise books.

Shamila Buhura, who is in charge of the school’s Pastoral Care Team, said that the philanthropic gesture was an initiative of the pupils who fundraised the materials from their parents.

She also said that the arrangement was done in an effort to reach out and provide meaningful support to those less fortunate.

"The students first understood the need to give and help their fellow pupils who are in dire need, especially the vulnerable ones,” Buhura explained.

According to her, there were many primary schools that they would have visited but they chose Mybyo primary due to particular reasons.

"We chose Mbyo primary school because it is the newest in the sector of Muyange and the one with the most poor and vulnerable pupils,” Buhura added.

During the function, a Primary Six pupil from Green Hills Academy, Kesly Kayiteshonga, made a moving speech encouraging her fellow pupils to take their studies seriously.

"We from Green Hills decided to collect school materials so that you may continue going to school and we want you to know that education is the pillar of our country. So we encourage you to never ever give up schooling because we are the leaders of tomorrow,” Kayiteshonga urged.

Green Hills Academy has been visiting several other schools and donating to those in dire need. Last week, the school visited Kinyinya Community Centre and paid tribute to the Genocide survivors there. The secondary school section is also fundraising in a bid to visit an orphanage in Kicukiro next week.
