Team Rwanda cyclists kick off their bid for glory at this year’s Grand Tour d’Algerie this afternoon. The race series will run up to March 28. The 22nd edition of the annual Grand Tour of Algeria is comprised of ten stages and will cover a total of 3500 km during 25 days of the competition. Grand Tour d’Algerie is the longest and most grueling race in UCI Africa Tour calendar.

The 22nd edition of the annual Grand Tour of Algeria is comprised of ten stages and will cover a total of 3500 km during 25 days of the competition. Grand Tour d’Algerie is the longest and most grueling race in UCI Africa Tour calendar.
Last year, Rwandan rider, Janvier Hadi, made history when he won the GP de la Vilee d’Oran race of Grand Tour d’Algerie at his inaugural participation.
Today, 80 riders including six of Team Rwanda are racing on a sum of 105km across Algiers in stage one of the competition also called, International Circuit of Algeria. This year’s showpiece has attracted a total of 14 teams coming Africa, Europe, Asia and America.
Team Rwanda arrived in Algeria on February 28th and have since then been training regularly to adapt to the new environment which is said to be very hot and windy. The team is accompanied by Coach Simon Hupperetz, mechanic Jamie Bissell and physiotherapist Obed Ruvogera.
Captained by Patrick Byukusenge, the team also includes youngster Samuel Mugisha, Joseph Areruya, Joseph Biziyaremye, Jeremie Karegeya and Jean Claude Uwizeye.
