Kigali City is to host the first ever Rwanda National Barista Championship (RNBC) slated for next year.

RNBC is a brain child of World Barista Coffee [WBC] started in 2001 by Britain and America, aimed at internationally improving the quality of coffee.

Rwanda will also be hosting Eastern African Fine Coffees Association conference meant to boost the local consumption of coffee.

According to the press release from EAFCA, the event also intends to increase market for Rwandan coffee and stimulate  its consumption among its (EAFCA) member countries.

The championship is organised by Rwandan coffee industry stakeholders and the Eastern African Fine Coffees Association (EAFCA). It is scheduled to run from February 2 to 7.

This will be the second international coffee event in Rwanda, after the Cup of Excellence competition that saw 24 Rwandan coffees win the prestigious award.

The statement further says that "the championship will also promote quality improvement of coffee through value addition on different levels of production.”

The event is expected to attract coffee experts from across the world that will make significant speeches to coffee growers.

Some vital speakers expected from international coffee industries include Starbuck’s, Peet’s, Neumann Gruppe, Krapf, Volcafe and Nsetle.

During the competition, judgement will be made on the preparation of three different drinks namely; cappuccino, espresso and specialty signature drink.

The final is the barista’s creative drink. Prior to the competition, World Barista Coffee (WBC) contestants will be trained.

The one that emerges winner of the competition will meet with other regional winners in the first ever African Barista Championship.
