The National Coordinator for the Northern Corridor Integration Projects (NICP), Monique Mukaruliza, has been elected the city mayor after winning a landslide victory over her challenger.

In the elections held at the Kigali Regional Stadium in Nyamirambo, Mukaruliza, who is also a former Minister for East African Community Affairs, garnered 182 votes, while her challenger, Régine Mukeshimana obtained only eight votes.

Mukaruliza will replace Fidèle Ndayisaba, who did not stand and has since been appointed as the Executive Secretary for the National Commission for Unity and Reconciliation (NURC).

The electorate was composed of councilors from the Council of Kigali and those from districts and sectors within the City.

Before the elections for mayor, councilors had elected City lawyer Anastase Rutabingwa as the President of the Council of City of Kigali.

Rutabingwa is a former president of the Rwanda Bar Association.

Meanwhile, Parfait Busabizwa was elected as the vice mayor in charge of Economic Development while Judith Kazayire was elected the vice mayor for Social Affairs.

Kazayire has been the advisor to the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion.
