Rusizi town has embarked on a new initiative to become a green city, positioning itself as one of the six secondary, district authorities said. Situated in South-Western Rwanda, Rusizi district boasts captivating scenery along the border with DR Congo’s Bukavu town, undergoing a transformative phase in both the business and tourism.

During the 'Rusizi Accountability Day and Coordination Meeting' held on November 29, Mayor Anicet Kibiriga emphasized the town's commitment to appearing green and clean in alignment with the government's policy. Local authorities, opinion leaders, security personnel, and stakeholders gathered to address critical issues within the district and evaluate its development.

Upon entering the hilly town, palm trees have been strategically planted along the main highway and the town's outskirts. Mayor Kibiriga expressed his vision for Rusizi town, stating, "The town is glowing, changes are visible to the eye. We want Rusizi town to become a green city—this is our vision.” He further emphasized the goal of ensuring no plastic bags or empty bottles are dumped on the streets outside designated areas.

Despite ongoing improvements and established infrastructure in the town, the district plans to construct a new roundabout connected by free Wi-Fi, serving as a public space. Businesspeople in downtown Rusizi, such as Jean Claude Habimana, affirmed that the town's expansion is making it an increasingly attractive location and is pivotal for development as a secondary city.

"Rusizi is becoming a better town, it's indeed located near Bukavu town from the neighboring DR Congo, making this area booming and vibrant,” noted Habimana. Alice Ayinkamiye, a businesswoman owning a shop in Kamembe Sector, applauded the initiative for addressing climate change, stating, "It’s a great initiative for climate change. Everyone deserves and needs fresh air and a conducive working environment.”

In addition to the town's green appearance, bypass roads are being paved to support the tourism sector, linking other main suburbs of the town. New buildings are also being erected within the town and along the shores of Lake Kivu.
