The footballer scored Angola’s goal against Rwanda (1-0) in Kigali that qualified the country for the 2006 World Cup, held in Germany pinning African giants Nigeria to the spot.
Quoting the Angolan press agency, Akwa who was recently sworn in as Member of Parliament, said last Sunday that while representing the people he will defend everyone’s interest, thus, using also the condition as former soccer player to continue giving his contribute to that sector.
The former striker, now an MP for the ruling MPLA party, recognised that as former athlete there are matters to be discussed throughout the four-year legislative period, whose solutions he considers as fundamental for a major development of sports in the country.
The 31-year-old first featured as a professional for Atletico Petroleos Luanda.
He played in Portugal for Alverca and Benfica, and in Qatar for club side Al Wakra and Al Gharafa.
Akwa captained the national side and was selected for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, despite then being without a club.
He has 80 caps and 36 goals for Angola as of June 2006. In his home country of Angola, Akwa is thought of as the elite sports icon.
In June 2007, Akwa signed with the home squad Petro Atletico Luanda.
He scored the winning goal against the Nigeria national team in qualifying on 20 June 2004 and also the most important goal in the Angolan football history against Rwanda in Kigali which qualified the Palancas Negras for their first ever World Cup.
