Rwanda is one of those countries that are set to benefit from the Confederation of African Rugby support in 2009.

Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF), who are now full members of the confederation were promised material support during CAR’s Annual General Meeting which was held last weekend in Dakar, Senegal.

Speaking to Times Sport yesterday, Janvier Ugeziwe who represented RRF in Dakar said that CAR had agreed in principle to facilitate Rwanda with a number of rugby equipment among other necessities.

"We have been promised plenty of equipment which is very good for Rwandan rugby. We were also promised over 50 rugby balls among other things,” Ugeziwe revealed.

Rwanda was further promised to be incorporated in bigger regional and continental competitions.

"Next year, we shall also get chance to compete in bigger tournaments,” the RRF Secretary General added.

The meeting which was chaired by CAR’s president Abdelaziz Bougja also reviewed this year’s calendar and a draft of the 2009 season was also presented.

During the meeting, according to the Rwandan official, Burkina Faso and Niger also acquired CAR’s full member status while seven other associate members were put on hold.

CAR was officially launched in January 1986, in Tunis, Tunisia by rugby officials from Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Kenya, the Seychelles and Madagascar.

In July 1992, under the initiative of Abdelaziz BOUGJA, a meeting of CAR was held in Casablanca, Morocco, with a view to integrating South Africa within CAR after the apartheid.

South Africa, who are also the IRB world champions are currently top on the CAR rankings.

In 2002, CAR developed a programme to develop rugby throughout the continent.
