Museveni declared winner of Uganda presidential elections

Uganda's election commission has declared incumbent President Yoweri Museveni the winner of the country's 2016 elections, garnering 60.7% of the votes.

Uganda's election commission has declared incumbent President Yoweri Museveni the winner of the country's 2016 elections, garnering 60.7% of the votes.

Museveni campaigned on the ticket of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

His closest competitor, opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who ran on the ticket of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) got 35.3%, according to the results announced by commission chairman Dr Badru Kiggundu.

The country registered a voter turnout of 63%, according to the panel.

The second runner-up was Amama Mbabazi the former Prime Minister who scored 1.43 per cent having campaigned as an independent candidate.

Besides being Prime Minister, Mbabazi was until early last year, the Secretary General of the NRM.

In total, there were eight presidential candidates.
