SC Kiyovu head coach Yves Rwasamanzi will be seeking for a win against defending champions APR FC when the two old rivals clash on match day 11 of the national football league today at Kigali Regional Stadium.
Rwasamanzi’s side sit in sixth place with 17 points, one point behind APR and seven behind table leaders AS Kigali, but they can reduce the gap with a victory this afternoon.
Emmanuel Rubona’s APR side are currently six points behind AS Kigali but with two games in hand, including today’s tricky tie against the Green Baggies, who are beaming with confident following two back to back wins.
The season has proved to be the most competitive compared to past years as the teams like AS Kigali (first) and Mukura VS (second), Rayon Sports (third) and Police FC in fourth position, have all showed potential to wrestle the title from APR.
"We need to win the game against APR because we have to be near the top teams. We know APR is a big team with a very good squad, but we are confident that we can win and close the gap at the top,” Rwasamanzi told Saturday Sport.
Victory for APR would take them four points behind AS Kigali, which is top of the table with 25 points, while if Kiyovu win, they move to 20 points, five behind the leaders.
Rubona is confident, "We are going into the game with a lot of motivation; our target is to win, not only to win the game but the title.”
The game will be APR’s first in the league since it returned from a three-month break, following the conclusion of the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The army side has been involved in CAF Champions League.
Second-place Mukura Victory Sport will play against Marines FC on Sunday at Huye Stadium while Police FC, in fourth place, will visit Amagaju (9th) in Nyamagabe.
