Police handball club are targeting to win this year’s Heroes’ Day tournament set for this weekend as the club bids for a repeat of the success of last season when they won six trophies, including the league title.

This year’s edition will be played at Ecole Secondaire Kigoma in Ruhango District. Police and Appega are the defending champions in the men and women’s category, respectively.

The four-time tournament winners Police, together with hosts Kigoma and APR are the favourites to challenge for the men’s title, while Appega and league reigning champions Ecole secondaire Mukingi are odds-on to clinch the women’s title.

"We are the defending champions and we give a lot of value to this tournament given our status so we want to win it again as way of making a good start to the new season,” said Police head coach, Antoine Ntabanyimana.

The reigning league and regional champions have strengthened their squad with three new players in preparation for the new season.

The trio include; center-back Jean Luis Munezero from APR, right-winger Jean Nepomuscene from St. Aloys Rwamagana and former Nyakabanda goal-keeper Placide Mutangana, who all signed one-year contract.

Women: Ecole Secondaire Mukingi, TSS Appega, TSS Hanika, University of Rwanda; College of Education and Groupe Scholaire Mwendo.
