Preliminary Round

SaturdayPolice 3-1 Atlabara

Three goals from Dany Usengimana, Fabrice Twagizimana and Isaie Songa were enough to secure a first leg win for Police FC against Atlabara in preliminary qualifying round of 2016 CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday at Kigali Regional Stadium.

Striker Usengimana, from taking part in the just concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals tournament with Amavubvi, netted the opening goal on eighth minute after the wonderful cross from skipper, Innocent Habyarimana.

Atlabara equalized on 38th minute from forward Khamis Leon Uso. The goal came after the good interchange of passes between Zakaria Scopas Woroh, Khamis Leon Uso, and Peter Timothy Dusman.

Central back Twagizimana gave something to smile for Andre Cassa Mbungo’s team after netted second goal on 58th minute with a bullet header off a well taken corner kick by Habyarimana while striker Songa scored the third goal for Police in the 74th minute after the good work of Usengimana.

Police, making only their second appearance in the continental competition, continued to press forward in search for more goals but Leo Adraa’s team stood firm, especially central defenders Deng Makig Deng and Mutwakil Abdel Karim did a good job to deal with the late pressure.

Usengimana, Amran Nshimiyimana and Habyarimana had opportunities to increased Police’s tally but failed to beat Atlabara goalie Alias James Wari.

Both sides will meet in the second leg in two weeks’ time in South Sudan, and should Police eliminate Atlabara, they will face the winner between Ajax Cape Town of South Africa and GD Sagrada Esperança of Angola in the next phase.
