Dear editor,
Recently the prosecution charged two senior RDF commanders with command responsibility for crimes committed by their subordinates.

You see, these subordinates killed a number of clergymen and other people immediately after the 1994 Genocide.

They were overcome with anger at the callous irresponsibility, and mostly direct responsibility, of these clergy who were supposed to protect the lives of the people but instead played a direct role in feeding the genocide machine.

The question that should always be asked is how far command responsibility goes.

Eople should be held responsible only for crimes that they have directly committed. How can a commander be responsible for, say, a soldier who gets out of camp and goes on a raping rampage, or robbery for that matter?

We hope that justice will prevail in this matter.

It is unfortunate that these commanders may be made to suffer simply because the west wants to make them suffer, as has been the case of the officers who were indicted by France’s Bruguire, and whose case has not taken off because France is not interested in pursuing the matter; yet neither is it doing anything to restitute the officers’ rights.
