MUHANGA — Security agents in Muhanga foiled an attempted robbery in Nyamabuye Sector and killed two armed robbers.

The suspected robbers were shot dead on Friday morning, and they are alleged to be the same pair who attempted to rob two shops on the evening of October 15, armed with a sub-machine gun (SMG).

Witnesses say the thugs were shot as they tried to rob a shop near Gitarama market. "An army patrol foiled the move and caught up with the thugs in the rooftop,” a witness said.

The names of the thugs were not readily available; but one of them was only identified as Nyabekenke. Police sources say the duo is responsible for past robberies in the area.

Security officials have previously blamed the increasing crimes to the growing number of residents in Gitarama town.

Most of the lodges and hotels are currently being closely monitored including screening to avoid admitting criminals.

Cases of highway robbery during late hours have also been reported on Kibuye road in the past weeks.
