KARONGI — Police in Bwishyura, Karongi District have arrested a man for allegedly assaulting a woman who had a miscarriage hours after the fight.

Calixite Ndagijimana, 44, a resident of Kiniha cell in Bwishyura, was arrested on Saturday, two days after assaulting his neighbour, Alvera Mukamurigo who was two months pregnant.

"He found me sitting at my neighbour’s place and started beating me. I tried to defend myself but all in vain,” said Mukamurigo at the police post.

Mukamuligo, a mother of three, was reportedly beaten when her husband was away. She was immediately taken to Kibuye Hospital in critical condition, from where she had a miscarriage two hours later.

Police officials say Ndagijimana might be charged with murder. According to Police, such crimes have been common in Karongi, but said that they are addressing the issue.
