Police on Saturday evening shot dead one Muhammad Mugemangango, a terror suspect after he attempted to escape by jumping off a police truck.
According to a statement from police, Mugemangango, who was in custody at Kanombe Police Post, had been taken to his home in Kimironko for a search, as part of the police investigations.
"On the way back, he jumped off the vehicle whereupon he was shot so he doesn’t escape but died in the process. The incident took place at Kimironko-Mushumba Mwiza road,” reads part of the police statement.
According to police, Mugemangango, who was deputy Imam at Kimironko mosque, was under investigations for radicalizing Rwandan youths to join the Syria-based terror group that calls itself Islamic State (ISIS).
"Rwanda National Police, acting on information provided by the public, has detected formation of a terror network and we will do our best to unmask the network and deal with culprits in accordance with the law.”
The statement which was signed by police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Celestin Twahirwa, says that investigations will continue to establish further details in this case.
