Members of Parliament on Monday began a week long outreach exercise across the country to follow up on the implementation of measures taken to improve public hygiene and fight against malnutrition. During the countrywide exercise, the legislators will also visit and review different development activities in the districts. To ensure efficiency in the exercise, the deputies are grouped into two or three member teams, according to a statement from Parliament.

The lawmakers are also expected to engage various leaders on strategies to improve the general population’s welfare. "Deputies will especially visit sectors that manifested low hygiene related problems as well as malnutrition,” reads part of the statement.

According to the communiqué, the deputies are also expected to follow up on the distribution of chemical fertilizers and manure, sensitize local population to be actively involved in development programmes and to understand challenges faced in implementation of these programmes. This is the second such exercise to be conducted by Members of Parliament. The first one was held in January last year where they focused on the implementation of programmes such as Vision Umurenge Programme, Ubudehe, Girinka, hygiene and the fight against malaria, human trafficking, and use of narcotics. Following the impact of the exercise, Parliament resolved to conduct it more regularly.
