Rwanda Energy Group (REG) women basketball club have signed Nia Clouden, a point guard who plies her trade in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

REG broke the bank to tie down the American in as part of club’s progressive efforts to strengthen their roster ahead of the forthcoming FIBA Africa Women's Basketball Africa (AWBL) due in Cairo, Egypt, from December 11-19.

Clouden, 23, plays for the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. She played college basketball at Michigan State before she was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2022 WNBA draft.

Club head coach Esperance Mukaneza told Times Sport that the American is expected in the country on Monday night and she will have her first training session with the team on Tuesday.

REG is undergoing intensive preparations at Lycée de Kigali Gymnasium and, with the package acquired so far, Mukaneza believes the team has the aptitude to make it to the medal brackets in Cairo in December.

REG booked a ticket to the FIBA Africa Women Basketball League (AWBL) after reaching the final of the 2023 Zone Five Women’s championship which they lost at the hands of eventual champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
