Police yesterday inaugurated a new police station in Rusebeya Sector of Rutsiro District that was constructed with contribution from residents.

The police station was constructed at a tune of Rwf27.5 million, with about Rwf20 million being a contribution from Rusebeya residents and Rwf7.5 million by the district under the frameworkt of their community policing.

The development comes at a time Rwanda National Police is decentralising police stations down to the sector level to get closer to the people.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Administration and Personnel, Juvenal Marizamunda, who officiated at the inauguration, said the police post comes as part of finding solutions to country’s challenges.

He said security is a major pillar in development and thanked residents of Rusebeya and local leaders for their support.

The police station has offices, abodes for officers and separate male and female holding facilities.

The building is also connected with electricity.

"I have no doubt the services that police officers have been providing you will improve tremendously to the best of your expectation,” he said.

Marizamunda urged the residents to keep up their spirit of fighting crime in their area, saying the efforts they put in contributing to securing their area was highly appreciated.

He also urged them to preserve Mukula National Park.

Gaspard Byukusenge, the mayor of Rutsiro, said the construction of a police station comes as part of community policing efforts whereby residents partner with security organs in ensuring safety in their neighborhoods.

"This police station is a result of the firm bond between residents of Rusebeya and Rwanda National Police in the fight against crime,” Byukusenge said.

Meanwhile, Marizamunda later met with hundreds of commissioned Police officers operating in Western Province as part of the RNP leadership countrywide tour to deliver President Kagame’s New Year message and evaluate the performance of territorial units.

He challenged the officers to double their efforts, be accountable and perform their duties diligently.
