Nyanza residents have lauded several social protection projects funded by Saudi Saadi Ibun Zaidi.
The projects, inaugurated on Tuesday, include, renovating of 100 housing units, and construction of more than 10 houses.
The funder also paid health insurance for over 10,000 vulnerable people while a dozen others received cows.
Speaking at the inauguration, Sheikh Asman Kabiriti, the Imam of Nyanza District, said the housing projects were worth over Rwf170 million.
He said, among the health insurance beneficiaries, 5,000 are Nyanza residents while the rest were selected from other parts of the country, adding that they target to offer health insurance to a total of 30,000 people.
Sheikh Kabiriti said the families that receive health insurance are also given livestock to empower them financially to cover their health insurance in the future.
Speaking through an interpreter, Ibun Zaidi said he was impressed by Rwanda’s leadership and security.
He commended government’s development and pro-poor initiatives.
"My support focus will be on health, education, and development,” he said.
Beneficiaries laud support
Clotulde Nambajimana, 40, a resident of Busasamana Sector, said the cow she received will help uplift her livelihood.
She is in the first Ubudehe category consisting the most vulnerable people.
"I depend on cultivation in people’s gardens. Now, that I have received a cow, life is going to change since I will have milk for my children,” said the mother of seven.
"It will also give me manure for my garden.”
The Nyanza District, mayor, Abdallah Murenzi, thanked the Saudi sponsor for the support.
Murenzi said they will ensure that they preserve the gains from the support package for self-reliance.
"Next time, I’m convinced that those who were offered health insurance premiums, will be in the category of those offering health insurance to others. A person who was given a cow should not be given health insurance again, because they got livestock to help them develop themselves,” he said.
Alphonse Munyantwali, the Southern Province Governor, commended the sponsor for complementing government initiatives.
"These activities are in line with the government’s programmes and we will do our best to support them. These are Godly gestures of love, helping one another through such acts,” he said.
