The month of October has been dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer. As a woman it is important to understand that you are vulnerable to breast cancer. For instance, just being female increases your chances of developing breast cancer.

Research shows that starting your period before the age of 12 heightens your chances. On the other hand if anyone in your immediate family was diagnosed with cancer, it also puts you at risk.

While the exact causes of cancers are not known, there are certain risk factors that may increase a woman’s likelihood of developing these diseases. The following are some of the factors that increase a woman’s vulnerability to breast cancer:

Excessive alcohol: Daily consumption of large amounts of alcohol puts one at risk; the more alcohol you have in your body the more chances of infection.

Saturated fats: A diet that contains high amounts of saturated fat is at high risk. Try to avoid polyunsaturated fats as well.

Late or no pregnancy: Women who give birth over the age of 40 are at risk.

Personal history of breast cancer: Prior cancer patients are at risk for development of cancer in the other breast. Regular breast check ups are important to detecting reoccurrence.

When detected early, breast cancer is treatable. Remember always to perform your monthly breast self exam and report any unusual findings to your physician immediately.

Here is how to do it:  Lie down and place a pillow under your right shoulder. Next, place your right arm under your head.  Use your three middle fingers of your left hand; massage your right breast with the pads of your fingers.

Check for any lumps or abnormalities. You can move in a circular motion, or up and down. Make sure you use the same motion every month. Continue the motion, extending to the outside of the breast to your underarm.

Repeat on left side. Next, repeat exam standing up, with one arm behind your shoulder as you examine each breast. Standing or sitting up allows you to feel the outside of the breast more accurately.

For added precaution, stand in front of a mirror and squeeze each nipple. Look for any discharge. Take note of any dimpling, redness or swelling.

Tips

Remember to mark your calendar every month as a reminder and if possible plan to do it on the same date of every month.  If you are in your monthly periods (menstruation), it is advisable to carry out the exercise a few days after their period.

If you are taking oral contraceptives the breast exam should be done on the first day of starting a new pack of pills. But most importantly, if you notice any abnormalities or any changes make sure you report them to a medical doctor, even if it is minor.

Remember you could save your life if the cancer is dictated in its early stages. It can be treated. If you feel it’s impossible for you to conduct a breast check your self then seek medical help.

Conversely you can also prevent cancer by eating healthy foods. Your daily diet should at least contain whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables. And for a good healthy life in general it is important that a good diet is combined with physical fitness which can be achieved through exercising your body.
