Amavubi skipper Jacques Tuyisenge has hailed his team-mates for what he described as "outstanding performance” against Cameroon in a friendly match played on Wednesday at Umuganda stadium in Rubavu.
The 24-year-old Tuyisenge believes that the performance of Amavubi against Cameroon shows how the team has grown.
"We enjoyed the game, everyone was in good shape against Cameroon and I believe this performance will give us more strength ahead of CHAN, it was an outstanding performance,” Tuyisenge said after Wednesday’s game.
He noted that, "We have shown everyone that Rwanda is a strong team and we are going to give more against DR Congo and hopefully these games will raise the moral of the team.”
CHAN 2016 hosts, Rwanda were held to a 1-1 draw by the Indomitable Lions as both teams put final touches in their preparation ahead of the tournament that kicks off on January 16 until February 7 in Kigali, Huye and Rubavu.
Amavubi central defender Abdul Rwatubyaye opened the scoring in the 41st minute through a header from a Yannick Mukunzi corner to give Johnny McKinstry’s side a lead but Moumi Ngamaleu equalised nine minutes after the half time to deny Rwanda a first win over Cameroon in seven attempts.
The Police FC captain added, "I really enjoyed how we played against Cameroon because we created many chances, the players have shown that they are capable of making Rwandans happy in CHAN.”
The home side was unfortunate not to have taken an early lead in the seventh minute when both Tuyisenge, and youngster Dany Usengimana missed an opportunity following a great cross from Fitina Obalenga.
Coach McKinstry praised the players but added that Rwanda deserved more than a draw going by the performance of the players.
Amavubi will play their last friendly match against DR Congoon Sunday at Umuganda Stadium. Rwanda are pooled in Group A alongside Ivory Coast, Morocco, Gabon. Amavubi will open their group matches against Ivory Coast on January 16 at Amahoro stadium.
