Two members of the District Security Support Organ (DASSO) in Gasabo District have been arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rwf200, 000.
Eduard Muhire and Jean Paul Mutaganzwa were arrested red-handed on Wednesday in Kacyiru Sector after their superior followed them up following information provided by the would-be victim.
It is alleged that the duo connived to solicit a bribe from a woman, who makes and sells bricks in Kacyiru.
Apparently, the two suspects currently detained at Remera Police station, threatened the woman that her business faced closure if she did not part with bribe.
Police in the district said the money was solicited from the woman under the pretence that it was a fine levied against her for operating in a wrong place.
One of the suspects, Muhire admitted to the crime, adding that they were supposed to share the money with his accomplice.
Meanwhile, Fred Mufuruke, the Director General of Territorial Administration and Governance in the Ministry of Local Government commended the partnership between Police and the public to fight corruption and other crimes in the country.
He observed that there are some individuals who try or want to use their powers to infringe on other people’s rights or harass them for their own selfish interests, the behaviour he said Rwandans shouldn’t tolerate.
"No one is above the law, they are required to do their duties professionally and in accordance with the law and going beyond that you will be charged accordingly,” he added.
Mufuruke further urged members of DASSO to be exemplary, uphold discipline and professionalism, and partner with police and other institutions and the public to fight and prevent crimes like corruption.
Superintendent Modest Mbabazi, the Police Spokesperson for the Central region called upon everyone to report anyone involved in graft related tendencies.
